The VODEP organization
solicited donations for the construction of new toilets for the kindergartners
and their teachers. The current toilets
were in disrepair, so the students and teachers had to use the facilities at
the nearby primary school.
Mr.
Frimpong, the manager of the Dompoase Kindergarten Complex, notified us that the wire mesh fence had been damaged and students from the adjacent schools
and kids from the village had been climbing over and under the fence during the
hours our school was closed. There had also
been some damage to the buildings and grounds.
Due to the condition of
the fence, VODEP decided to suspend the construction of the new toilets.
VODEP applied for
a permit before this permanent structure could be built. The Chief of Dompoase was also
consulted. Mr. Frimpong met with the
Asokwa Municipal Assembly, and received permission “to build a solid cement
wall to prevent entry of anyone during the hours the school is not in session.”
After enough money was raised, we built an
8-foot cement wall around the school and cafeteria/library buildings, for the kids to be secure when they are in school and prevent further damage to the school and grounds.
The construction of the
8-foot cement wall was completed and two solid metal gates were installed
also. With the remaining funds after the
wall was completed, an artist painted letters, images, numbers and shaped all
around the outside of the wall. We have
been told that some of the parents in the village are using these images to
practice the alphabet and learn to read!
